Oddsmakers at the sportsbook in basketball betting observed that the Memphis Grizzlies re-signed their biggest competitor on Thursday, inking Rudy Gay to a big five-year deal. Gay is expected to make more than $13 million per season for the Grizzlies. The package also features annual raises of 10.5 percent. That’s a certain upgrade over the five-year, $50 million offer he turned down last season. Gay, an unrestricted free agent, was contemplating get togethers with numerous teams including the Knicks and the Nets. Any deal that Gay was offered on the open market was promised to be matched by Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley.
Also on Thursday, Minnesota made a move that puzzled basketball betting sportsbook online bettors as they signed Darko Miliic to a $20 million dollar deal. For a competitor who was on the brink of leaving the league, it’s a fairly significant commitment. He was strongly contemplating heading back to his native nation of Serbia to play basketball there. However Coach Kurt Rambis is interested by the possibility the 25-year-old Milicic showed in the final 2 months of the season.
The odds of the Grizzlies being successful next season are much better than the probabilities for the Timberwolves. Gay, who averaged 19.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per match, leads a talented young lineup for Memphis. Memphis almost had a winning track record this past season as they finished 40-42. They were 39-41-2 against the point spread. The Grizzlies in fact finished above New Orleans last season in the Southwest Division. Zach Randolph headed them in scoring with 20.8 points per match but Gay was their best competitor. The Grizzlies were okay on offense last season as they averaged 102.5 points per match, good for 7th in the league. The problem for Memphis was a defense that permitted 104 points per match and was 24th in the league.
While the Grizzlies made a good move, the Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t. Minnesota hasn’t won since trading away Kevin Garnett and it’s easy to see why. The squad signed Darko Milicic to a four-year deal, throwing away $20 million in the process. It’s just mind boggling that Minnesota would throw so much cash away on a competitor that considered retiring in February. Milicic was obtained by Minnesota back in February and he averaged 11 points and five rebounds in the last 2 months of the season. The squad also brought in second round pick Nikola Pekovic to a four-year $13 million dollar deal.
Minnesota was not quite good last season as they went 15-67. They weren’t that fantastic against the point spread either as they went 37-44-1. At 17.1 points per match, Al Jefferson headed the squad in scoring. The squad was 20th in the league on offense because they averaged 98.2 points per match. Their defense was poor, permitting 107.8 points per match, 29th in the league.
The signing of Milicic means that Minnesota is basically from the free agent market unless they determine to put Al Jefferson on the market. The signing also means that Minnesota probably will have difficulty for years to come.
