Since they paid out a weak 5 times in 16 NFL wagering competitions, NFL betting fans were put off by the sloppy play of the Pittsburgh Steelers a year ago. Football betting odds makers were much more put off by the off season reports about Ben Roethlisberger who will be suspended for the start of the NFL wagering year.
Roethlisberger faced accusations of sexual abuse for the 2nd consecutive year and despite the fact that no charges were filed he was roasted in the press and by disgusted fans. The quarterback was planning to set it all behind him by centering on NFL and has had a fantastic training camp.
But in the Pittsburgh Steelers preseason opener he did not see action, much as he wanted to.
Pittsburgh won a 23-7 win over the Detroit Lions and covered the NFL odds as 3-point home faves as the match went under the total of 33.5. The Pittsburgh Steelers will play at the new york giants on August 21 in their next preseason competition.
Monsoon like rains that delayed action for well over an hour damaged the match with Detroit. Byron Leftwich was ineffective versus the Lions, and he is slated to start in place of Roethlisberger during his 6-game regular season suspension.
Third string quarterback Dennis Dixon was the most effective signal caller for the team as he threw for a touchdown as well as connecting on a bomb that put in place another score. Dixon may have been the happiest Steeler in the opener as he said, “I’m having a blast.” Hometown fans, who eventually started chanting “We want Ben, We want Ben” as Leftwich had trouble, were definitely not booing Roethlisberger that day.
“With the number of snaps we anticipated the first offense running, it just wasn’t appropriate to play him,” Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh’s head coach, said. “He wanted to play. He’s had an awesome training camp.” Tomlin was obviously not thrilled with the results of the 1st offensive unit, and that will be a problem with the Pittsburgh Steelers capacity to beat the NFL lines. Since Tomlin was hoping the unit would begin to click, Leftwich got 2 times the amount of playing time than was expected, despite the fact that it never did.
“We weren’t really clicking,” said Leftwich. “We did some things not so good, but we’ll work on it.” It may be a really huge problem because the future of the 2010 year for the Pittsburgh Steelers is going to rely seriously on Leftwich. He may leave Roethlisberger with a string of losses to make up for when he rejoins the squad later this year if he can’t gel in his performance with the rest of the squad. The harder Roethlisberger is going to have to work to compensate with the more games the Pittsburgh Steelers lose up front. But Roethlisberger can step into a squad that’s already on a roll and moving along nicely into their 2010 year if Leftwich can pull this off and maybe get a few victories early on. It is lots of responsibility for Leftwich to undertake.
Pittsburgh is a NFL betting co-favorite with the Baltimore Ravens to win the AFC North.
